Roxana Mehran Reflects on TCT Over the Years

Roxana Mehran, MD, joint chief scientific officer of the Clinical Trials Center at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in New York, remembers the early buzz about the first TCT meeting 20 years ago.

A cardiology fellow at the time, Mehran, who is also an associate professor of medicine at Columbia University Medical Center, heard about a TCT meeting from some colleagues and knew that the 1988 meeting had taken place in a hotel basement. That first meeting was based on live remote video of cases that demonstrated cutting-edge technology.

"They just raved about what they saw and how invigorated they felt when they came back," Mehran said. "I couldn’t imagine what they were talking about."
As the reputation of the meeting continued to grow, Mehran remembers arguing with her colleagues in 1994 about who would get to attend TCT. "I was really, really disappointed when I could not attend the meeting that year," she said.

A year later, Mehran was in the thick of planning and organizing the meeting. By then, she had finished her fellowship and had joined the "best program in interventional cardiology in the world" at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., a program led by Martin B. Leon, MD, Gary S. Mintz, MD, and Jeffrey J. Popma, MD.

From 3,000 to 11,000 attendees

When Mehran joined the TCT team, the meeting drew about 3,000 attendees each year. "It was already a big meeting," she said. This year, there are about 11,000 attendees. The live cases, now presented in huge arenas, still serve as the backbone of the meeting, Mehran said in an interview.

The presented cases run the gamut from "the bread-and-butter to those you will never, ever do."

Since Mehran joined the TCT team, the meeting has added more academic content each year, with more clinical trial results and other data-driven talks, all in an effort to be "more than just a [training] course."

Being in the club

"TCT is there to present all of the data in the most unbiased way possible," said Mehran, adding that interventional cardiologists "probably have more publications and more randomized trials than any other subspecialty."

Now into her 14th TCT meeting, Mehran said she still gets excited "the moment before the meeting starts." Even though the meeting has grown, the atmosphere fosters the feeling of "being in the club," Mehran said.

"It’s a friendly atmosphere where you really feel like, ‘This is why I work such late hours.’ And obviously, it’s an unprecedented educational experience for an interventionalist," she said.

"It’s like being a kid in the candy store. You can see it all, including things you’ve never envisioned. It’s all there."
