At the 20^th anniversary of the TCT symposium Research Foundation presented Mehdi H. Shishehbor, DO, MPH, PhD, with the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology Young Investigator Award.

This award acknowledges clinical and academic distinction in interventional vascular medicine and honors the memory of Thomas J. Linnemeier, MD, the former chief of the Indiana Heart Institute, senior vice president of New Ventures, and chief medical officer of Vascular Intervention at Guidant Corp.

The award encourages continued commitment and dedication to both patient care and academic research and includes a $10,000 scholarship.

"I am honored to be recognized by the leaders of interventional cardiology for the Thomas J. Linnemeier Spirit of Interventional Cardiology," Shishehbor said.

"This is an important award that recognizes not only academic achievement but also clinical skills."

Research interests, recent publications

Shishehbor’s research interests include three areas of coronary artery disease: the role of inflammation and oxidation in atherogenesis; the impact of DES versus BMS for treating various patients and lesions; and the role of socioeconomic status and contextual factors on cardiovascular disease and physiology.

Recent publications have included articles in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology comparing the long-term impact of DES vs. bare-metal stents and emerging cardiovascular risk factors; in the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine on percutaneous treatment of calcific aortic stenosis; and in the American Heart Journal on the safety and efficacy of overlapping sirolimus-eluting stents vs. paclitaxel-eluting stents.

Shishehbor is co-author of the emergency manual Management of Patients in Cardiac Intensive Care Units (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins), and has authored chapters for clinical textbooks on inflammatory markers in acute coronary syndromes, mitral and tricuspid valve disease, and imaging for intracardiac procedures.

Collaborations and committment

Shishehbor, who is an interventional cardiology fellow in the department of cardiovascular medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, has collaborated with colleagues from other institutions such as Case Western Reserve University, Duke University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Washington.

"I am very happy and excited about this award and hope to use this achievement to fuel my commitment in becoming an excellent clinical and academic interventional cardiologist," Shishehbor said.

The other finalists for the award were J. Mocco, MD, MS, a fellow in endovascular neurosurgery from the University at Buffalo in New York, and Martijn Meuwissen, MD, a fellow in interventional cardiology at the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands.
